How long does laying turf take?
The turf itself goes down on a prepared surface in an average garden in one to two days. Preparation takes longer — clearing, breaking up and enriching the soil and levelling the surface accurately, because every bump shows later and can be felt underfoot. The lawn is ready for normal use in about a month and a half, once the turf has rooted, rather than the months that sowing from seed requires.
Can turf be laid in summer?
It can, but in summer there is no room for delay — the turf is laid the same day it arrives and watered heavily straight away, because cut turves lose water fast in the heat and take less readily. For the first two to three weeks watering is daily and generous, so that the water reaches through the turf to the soil beneath. That is why summer laying works best where an irrigation system is already installed, and we agree the date in advance so that the ground preparation is finished before the turf arrives.
When can you walk on and mow new turf?
For the first two to three weeks the lawn should be spared any traffic until the roots have grown down into the soil — you can check by gently lifting a corner of a turf; if it resists, it has taken. The first cut usually comes once the grass has grown enough, with sharp blades and the height raised, and from that point on watering becomes less frequent and longer. After the turf is laid comes rolling and a thorough watering, which beds the turf down onto the soil and helps it root faster.
Which is better, turf or sowing grass seed?
Turf gives an even, dense lawn almost straight away and keeps weeds out because there is no bare soil, but it needs more careful preparation of the base and consistent watering at the start. Sowing offers a wider choice of mixtures and is easier to carry out over large areas, but it needs the right time of year, patience, and a battle with weeds until the lawn closes over. In both cases the scale of the job depends most on the condition and preparation of the base, the size of the area, and how much care the lawn needs until it closes over, so on site we recommend whichever suits your timescale, the use the area will get, and how much watering you can realistically provide.
