What does a garden design project include?
The project starts from the site as it actually is — measurements, an assessment of the soil, how much light the plot gets through the day, and the existing planting that is worth keeping. Out of that comes a sketch layout, then a precise plan with a bill of quantities, planting layout, paths and lighting. The work is carried out to that plan, step by step, so that nothing has to be improvised on site or redone once it is already finished.
What affects the cost of a landscape design project?
Several things determine the price: the size of the plot, how demanding the site is for access and preparation, whether it is a concept design alone or a full plan with a bill of quantities, and the choice of materials and planting. That is why a serious estimate cannot be given over the phone. The site visit and assessment are free, and after the visit you receive a detailed quote with no obligation.
When is the best time to start planning a garden?
Winter and early spring are ideal for planning, because there is time to settle the layout, the choice of plants and the ground preparation without rushing, so that planting and the rest of the work fall in the season that suits them. Visiting the site outside the growing season has an advantage of its own — the ground, the slopes and the spots where water sits are all clearly visible. If you have left it late, a plan can still be drawn up during the season; the work is simply scheduled around what can be planted at the time.
Can an old garden be made over without tearing everything out?
Usually it can, and usually that is the wiser course. Mature trees, an established hedge and healthy shrubs are worth something no nursery can supply in a single season, so the plan is built around them — with pruning, thinning and refreshing the ground beneath. What is diseased, overgrown or in the wrong place is taken out, and the new layout is fitted around what stays.
